UNDER THE VOLCANO

Under the Volcano, a novel by Malcom Lowry, remains one of literature’s most powerful and lyrical statements on the human condition, and a brilliant portrayal of one man’s constant struggle against the elemental forces that threaten to destroy him.

The Volcano represents the earths “elemental forces”, unsettled requirements, a landscape of beautiful destruction. They are inherently exotic and dangerous at the same time. I’m interested in the volcano as a specter of reckoning looming ominously as a backdrop – sporadic, unforgiving and magnificent, capturing the uncertainty and contradictions of life itself.
